Best time to visit

The best time of year to visit Bordeaux & Saint Emilion for a wine tasting tour are the spring months of April, May and June, and the autumn months of September and October, when the weather is favourable for a wine tasting tour and visitor numbers are not too high. The summer months of July and August are typically hot, with daytime temperatures regularly hitting 30°C. Winter temperatures are always mild, although it tends to be rainy, so don't forget your umbrella! Some wineries and restaurants close during January and February so be sure to check before booking.

How to get there

Saint Emilion is located approximately 40 kilometres / 25 miles from the city of Bordeaux, which is home to an international airport (Bordeaux-Merignac airport). The easiest way to visit Saint Emilion is on a day tour from Bordeaux. Alternatively, a direct train operates frequently between Bordeaux and Saint Emilion. The train journey is approximately 40 minutes, then from Saint Emilion station it’s a 15-20 minute walk into the centre.  The Saint Emilion wine region is quite spread out, so if you wish to explore and visit a number of chateaux we would recommend booking a wine tasting tour or hiring a car.
