Tour Overview
Discover a new and vibrant wine industry with this amazing day trip! Ideal for foodies and wine aficionados, this small-group tour of Nova Scotia’s pretty wine-centric destination is led by a local guide. You’ll ride in a comfortable vehicle to the stunningly beautiful Annapolis Valley to visit three award-winning wineries for tours and tastings.
Nova Scotia has been growing grapes since the early 1600s but the commercial wine industry didn’t begin until the late 1970s. A unique cool-climate wine region, the grapes grown here were mostly of the hybrid sort, bred for our cooler conditions. With a growing season similar to Champagne, sparkling wines have taken off in the last ten years, winning awards at Effervescents du Monde and other notable competitions. In recent years, a push to growing vinifera varietals has created some wonderfully crisp Rieslings and Chardonnays alongside our unique varietals such as L’Acadie Blanc, Ortega and Geisenhiem 318.
Your first stop is at the Planters Ridge Winery in Port Williams with a bucolic country setting featuring a 150-year-old restored barn. Your tour here focuses on the winemaking process, from harvesting grapes to bottling wine.
Then you’ll visit the oldest established winery of the region for a private tour of the vineyard to learn about our unique grape varietals such as the signature grape L’Acadie Blanc and how the vines are maintained. The vineyard is situated overlooking the Minas Basin where the highest tides in the world occur.
A private wine tasting follows before lunch is served at Restaurant Le Caveau, one of the world’s top 20 winery restaurants!
L’Acadie Vineyards, tucked away in the charming Gaspereau Valley, is known for its organic and sparkling wines. Sample some bubbly here and learn about the vineyards’ organic farming practices and how tradional method sparkling wines are made.
Finally, you’ll also visit the whimsical Tangled Garden for a tour of the expansive gardens and still more sampling, this time delicious chutneys, jams, jellies and liqueurs that compliment any meal.
