Tour Overview
When you land in Funchal the first thing you can feel is the fresh breeze from the Atlantic, but Madeira is so much more than a sunny island with great beaches. On this 4-day tour you will discover this special wine secret in the Atlantic.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Funchal
Your host will be waiting for you at Funchal’s International Airport to transfer you to your hotel in the city. Take your time to enjoy the city, relax at the hotel and explore the many local coffee shops with great views over the Atlantic.
Day 2: Madeira Wine
Meet your guide at your hotel in the morning. Today you will drive along the south coast of the island. Your first encounter will be the idyllic fishermen’s village of Câmara de Lobos where you will learn a little about the fishing history.
Then continue towards Cabo Girão (580m) - Europe’s highest cape - from where you can enjoy a fantastic view over Funchal, the south coast and the ocean. Europe’s highest cliff skywalk opened at the top of the Cabo Girão Cliff at the end of October 2012. It is now Europe’s highest cliff skywalk.
From here you will be able to see Fajã dos Padres where the famous Malvasia grape variety was first planted. It is now time for your first wine tasting held on the family cellars, followed by a lunch of the best flavours of the island, paired with the best local wines and that breath-taking view.
In the afternoon, cross the island from southern to northern coast, passing by Encumeada. Your destination on the northern coast is Sao Vicente where you will enjoy a second vineyard visit followed by wine tasting.
Return to your hotel via Paul Da Serra.
Day 3: Exploring Madeira Wine Cellars
After breakfast your host will meet you at your hotel. Today you will explore Madeira wine cellars in the city centre, whilst discovering the city secrets.
Located just ten minutes away from the centre of Funchal, the Blandy Estate, bought by John Blandy in 1826, is one of the few traditional Madeira farms still with agricultural activity. As you walk through the estate you will be able to see the legacy left by the various generations of the Blandy family that lived there. Your guide will explain the whole process that involves the Blandy's Madeira Wine from the moment of the cultivation of the vineyard to the nectar in the bottle. The tour concludes with a tasting session.
After lunch, continue your journey to discover the fifth generation of knowledge and experience dedicated to the production, marketing and export of Madeira Wine that runs one of the oldest wine companies in the island. This Producer is widely recognised for the considerable stock of old and rare wines. After a tour and tasting the rest of the day is free for you to relax or continue your exploration independently.
