Tour Overview
Combine a tour of Catalonia’s nature, history and wine in a day trip from Barcelona! Follow your expert local guide to discover the incredible Montserrat Monastery, take a short hike along mountain trails and see the breath-taking views of the mountain and the monastery. Then, end the day visiting an organic, family run winery in El Penedès, one of the oldest wine-making regions in Europe.
This wonderful day tour starts in the centre of Barcelona where you will meet your friendly guide at 8am. Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind as you drive out into the countryside of Catalonia on your drive toward Montserrat.
After a drive of just 45 minutes you will arrive in Montserrat. The name literally translates to “sawed mountain” in Catalan, so named because of its multi-peaked, rocky mountain range. Perched on the edge of the mountain side, at an altitude of 720m above sea level is the Santa Maria de Montserrat Benedictine monastery. This impressive monastery is a popular pilgrimage site for Catholics, and the spiritual centre of Catalonia as it is home to the famous Black Madonna “La Moreneta” - patron saint of the Catalans. Enjoy a visit of the monastery to discover its amazing history with your guide.
After exploring the monastery it’s time for a hike and to enjoy some breath-taking views. The hike of around 6.5km will take you around Montserrat to enjoy the incredible views of the monastery and the mountain. The path can be steep so we recommend you wear suitable footwear.
After your hike, it’s back to the monastery where there will be some free time to visit the farmers market or simply relax.
Next it’s time to leave Montserrat and continue your journey to El Penedès wine country, one of the oldest wine-making regions in Europe! El Penedès is the most important wine producing area around Barcelona and is best known for its production of Cava (sparkling wine).
Your guide will take you to visit a very special family-owned organic winery for a guided tour and tasting. Visit the cellars and learn about their history and the wine making process as you go. The visit concludes with a tasting of 3 wines from their range of white, red and sparkling wines, accompanied with some delicious Catalan snacks.
After your winery tour and a fantastic day exploring Montserrat it will be time for the drive back to Barcelona where you will arrive at your drop off point at around 5pm.
