Tour Overview
Learn about the birthplace of Zinfandel-Kastela wine and enjoy wine tastings at two wineries with this fun half-day wine tour.
Widely considered an American original, Zinfandel has found its way to becoming a Thanksgiving Day classic.
However, a series of events in recent years shone a new light on the true origins of Zinfandel. A team of enthusiasts led by Croatian-born Californian winemaker Mike Grgich traced back the origins of Zinfandel to the hillside of Split, specifically the town of Kastela.
The original name for Zinfandel was and still is Crljenak Kastelanski, and it is experiencing a rebirth in Kastela and the surrounding area. Small family plots are becoming serious vineyards, improvised wineries are getting upgraded with technology and serious Zinfandel wine is starting to be produced after an absence of hundreds of years.
Enjoy a wine tasting in Matela Winery cellar dating back to the second half of 19th century and enjoy a wine tasting of several wines paired with local delicacies including ‘The Original Zin’.
Next, visit the Kuzmanic winery located on the slopes of mount Kozjak, with amazing sea views, dating back to the early 18th century. Enjoy a tasting of 4 award-winning wines. You will try indigenous Croatian sorts unavailable anywhere else in the world and visit the historical Biblical Garden.
