Formerly a Jewish ghetto, today it is one of Budapest’s hippest neighbourhoods, known for its quirky bars, cool cafés, hidden art galleries, and cutting-edge design shops. Before World War II it was one of Europe’s largest Jewish communities, and it remains the centre of Jewish life in Hungary today.
The seventh district's winding back streets are not only filled with fine neoclassical buildings and old-fashioned artisan workshops, but with deep history, delicious food, and a contemporary buzz blended with the aura of the past.
You will learn about the neighbourhood’s past, including its troubled more recent past. You will also walk past the neighbourhood’s four synagogues which have long been focal points of Budapest’s Jewish society. You will see the modern face of the district, including fabulous murals and street art, fun design shops, and great cafés.
Though the neighbourhood today can claim to have some of the most diverse culinary offerings in Budapest, the focus of the tour will be on the dynamic Jewish cuisine found here.
Do come hungry, as the tour will include several tastings of Hungarian-Jewish specialties. You’ll leave the tour with a full belly, as well as a deeper understanding of Hungary’s Jewish history, culture, and cuisine.
