Winery Overview
Discover Quinta da Furada, located in the Douro Valley, with vineyards and vines dating from the 19th century, including pre-phyloxeric vines and ancient olive trees, including one considered the oldest in the entire region.
With a strong connection and fascination for the Douro Valley wine region, Quinta da Furada makes their products with the deepest respect for ancient traditions that they maintain and follow religiously.
The Quinta produces really fine wines. The tredding of the grapes is done by foot, which allows a greater maceration of the grape and consequently a greater extraction of colour and phenolic compounds. It is a slow, expensive process and requires sacrifice and discipline from those who do it. However, it leaves its mark on the wine.
The first stage of the tread is known as "cutting", which consists of crushing the grapes to separate the juice from its skins. At this stage, treading staff (two for every 750 kilograms of grape) usually form a line, shoulder to shoulder, and move slowly through the lagar, stepping in a rhythmic manner, for about two hours, to ensure the crushing of the grapes.
After this stage comes the “freedom” phase, which lasts about three hours. In it, the treader can move freely throughout the lagar, ensuring that the grape skins are kept submerged under the surface of the wine. If the cutting phase tends to be carried out in silence, except for a time stamp, the freedom phase is usually done with some music typical of the vintage season.
After a few hours, fermentation begins and the heat and alcohol produced begin to release fabulous, heady color, tannins and aromas.
Wine lovers are welcomed at the Quinta on Saturday. Visits of the farm, vineyards, winery, olive groves and tasting of wines, olive oil, honey, olives and other Quinta da Furada products are available, including a typical lunch (upon reservation).
