Tour Overview
Discover the high altitude wine region of Salta with this 2-day wine tour which combines wine tasting in Cafayate with a hike through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Argentina’s Andean north west.
Apart from Argentina’s emblematic Malbec, Salta is known for its Torrontes white wine, which finds its best expression in the Valles Calchaquies, a wonderful scenic spot close to the border with Bolivia. The dry conditions, with a wide range between day and night temperatures, also makes this ideal for Tannat, a deep full-bodied red which is the perfect accompaniment to the nation’s classic barbecue.
Itinerary:
Day 1: After pick-up at your hotel in Salta, travel down through the tobacco region of the Valle de Lerma and on into the Quebrada de las Conchas canyon, visiting the naturally carved wonders of the Amphitheatre and Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat).
Arrive in Cafayate in time for lunch and a wine tasting and tour at one of the town’s newest wineries, Piattelli. After lunch, you can visit a few of the smaller family-run wineries which date back to the late 19th century.
In the evening, relax at your hotel or venture out for dinner at one of the recommended restaurants.
Day 2: In the morning, while it’s still cool, head into the Quebrada de las Conchas for a 7km hike rewarded with some close-up views of the spectacular ochre landscape formed millions of years ago. This is a generally flat, low altitude hike suitable for all hikers, experienced and enthusiastic.
You will return to a beautiful vineyard in Cafayate for lunch, and can enjoy a stroll round the square and a taste of the wine flavoured ice cream (the Torrontes sorbet is spectacular).
Hit the road back to Salta late in the afternoon, at the best time of day to enjoy the perfect light in the canyon.
