4-Day Wine Escape to the Douro Valley from Porto

A popular destination for wine lovers, the Douro Valley is home to plummeting terraced vineyards and dotted with traditional quintas that have been passed down from generation to generation. 

This 4-day private wine tasting tour will take you on a magical journey through the world’s oldest wine region, offering an insight into the region’s famous wines. 

Itinerary:

Day 1: Depart from Porto towards the Douro Valley in the morning. Your first stop will be at Aveleda, an imposing and key player estate for the vinhos verdes DOP. You will be invited to visit the beautiful historical gardens and vineyards and witness their handmade cheese production. End the experience with a delicious wine pairing set lunch. 

After the Aveleda visit, continue your journey to the Douro wine lands. Make a stop in a small village in the hills of the Douro Valley, where Moscatel wines are produced - something quite unique in the region. Let this discovery excite your tastebuds for what's ahead.

A short drive will take you to Quinta do Noval: an iconic and historic port wine producer. It is the only estate where you can find a sample of native Portuguese vines, which were not affected by the insect phylloxera that was responsible for the massive extinction of native vines during the 19th century. Enjoy the opportunity to taste their mythical port wines, accompanied by your first overview of the Douro Valley landscape.

By the end of the afternoon, check in to your selected hotel.

Day 2: In the morning you will go hiking in the hills and through the vineyards of the Douro, in the company of a local trekking specialist. 

It's a short car ride to the trail starting point. Appreciate being in the middle of nature and the vineyards. Observe, learn and discover what makes this environment so perfect for Port and Douro DOC wines. After the walk, refresh with a local juice or a cold Port Rose drink, enjoying the Douro´s breeze.

Time for lunch at the Nova Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate, a stunningly beautiful quinta where DOC Douro wines are taken as seriously as the Port wines. During your gourmet lunch, savour Douro´s high-quality wines and the incredible views from the terrace over the valley. In the early afternoon, you can visit the fantastic wine museum on the property and find out about life as a worker in the steep vineyards hundreds of years ago. Walking around the grounds of the winery will give you some majorly Insta-worthy shots!

The day ends with a cruise on the Douro River in a private boat. This is the opportunity to have a different perspective of the valley, looking up towards the terraced vineyards. 

Day 3: After breakfast, your guide will drive you to the standout zone of Douro Superior, where the most iconic Port and DOC wines are produced. 

Start the day in harmony with nature as you paddle a kayak along the river. Explore the traces left by the inhabitants of the Douro more than 3,000 years ago, visiting several well-preserved rock paintings which are distributed on the banks of the Douro and Coa water stream. 

For lunch, recover your energy at the restaurant located by the Côa Museum, which features a beautiful view of the region. After the meal, visit the Côa Museum, and discover the importance of the archaeological finds along the Douro Valley.

Your afternoon will be at the Vale do Meão wine estate, home to acres of precious vineyards. This wine estate produces one of the best Portuguese wines - Barca Velha. End the day with the magnificent views and grandeur of this property, located in the heart of Douro Superior terroir.

Day 4: Appreciate your last moments in the Douro Valley and at your convenience, depart in the morning towards Porto.
