Tour Overview
Cape Town is a melting pot of cultural and ethnic groups, all of which have influenced the cuisine of the city. Discover the contemporary food trends in the city as well as the traditional cultural offerings on this private, full-day foodie tour.
Start the day with a cup of coffee at Truth Coffee, one of the Cape's most famous micro coffee roasters. Then move on to the historic, colourful neighbourhood of Bo-Kaap, home to the Cape Malay community.
You will stop along the way at several local eateries to sample flavours that are unique to South Africa and Cape Town, such as biltong & droewors (spiced and cured meat) and koeksisters (kinda like a donut).
Visit Atlas Spices, the most popular spice store in town. Malay slaves that were brought to South Africa hundreds of years ago brought with them exotic spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and coriander. They added garlic and ginger to their meals and created a whole new world of culinary adventure
After stocking up with some exceptional spices, make your way to your Bo Kaap Cooking Class. Food plays an important role in the community life of the Cape Malay. They have always believed that it is not enough to simply provide your guests with good food; you must entertain them with good conversation and make them feel welcome and appreciated.
During your visit you will learn to make rooti and flat bread from scratch, fold and cook samosas and learn the secrets behind a traditional Cape Malay curry. Finally, sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labour for lunch. Before leaving, you will be given the recipes of all the food you made to experiment once back at home!
After lunch, there is the opportunity to stroll around the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood to view and photograph the brightly coloured houses before returning back to your hotel.
