Winery Overview
Discover Quinta do Vallado Winery, located in the heart of the Douro wine region, and one of the most recognised Quinta in the Douro Valley.
Today the winery is owned by João Ferreria Alvares Ribeiro, Francisco Ferreira and Francisco Olazabal.
A new state-of-the-art winery was built in 2009 which produces dry wines and Ports, and a newly built, ultra-modern hotel was completed in 2012 making Quinta do Vallado a travel destination in the Douro Valley.
The architect chosen to develop this project was Francisco Vieira de Campos, from Porto School of Architecture, and has since earned several architecture awards.
However, alongside technological advancements, Quinta do Vallado still uses the traditional foot-treading method in granite lagares for some wines.
Also in 2009, the construction of a new underground cellar was completed, with the capacity for 1,000 casks, where the best wines age in ideal temperature and humidity conditions.
Tawny Ports are aged for many years in large wooden casks (tonéis) that have been passed down from one generation to the next.
Quinta do Vallado’s 65 hectares of vineyard are planted in south and west facing slopes of schist soil, with altitudes ranging between 80 and 400 meters.
Of these, 55 hectares are comprised of vineyards planted in the 1990s, mostly in single row terraces, pruned according to the double cordon system, and with one variety only in each plot.
The remaining 10 hectares are formed by very old vineyards planted between 1920 and 1950, amongst which Vinha da Granja (1929) and Vinha da Coroa (1958) stand out. These are planted in continuous rows, 1,2 meters apart and with 1,1 meters between each plant, following the natural contours of the land. They have a density of 7.200 plants/ha.
Wine lovers can visit the winery, as well as discover all the Quinta's amazing wines in a number of wine tastings.
