Winery Overview
Founded in the 13th century by the Knights Templar, the Commanderie de Peyrassol is situated on the lower slopes of the Massif des Maures and covers an area of some 850 hectares, with 93 hectares dedicated to growing grapes. The vineyard sits on clay and limestone soil which is ideal for viticulture. Since the Templars planted the first grape varieties some 800 years ago, generations of wine growers have applied their know-how to nurture the vineyard and its wines to the excellent standard they are today.
In 2001 Philippe Austruy purchased the estate and he, along with his nephew Alban Cacaret, has managed the Commanderie de Peyrassol since 2003. Together they have restored the domaine to its former glory and have made Peyrassol one of the most respected vineyards in Provence.
The wines produced at Peyrassol are created by an expert team who have made sure the estate has adapted to the major advances in oenology but without denying tradition. Clos Peyrassol, Château Peyrassol, and Commanderie Peyrassol are three AOC "Côtes de Provence”. These wines are classed among the top Grands Crus and are renowned for representing the essence of Provence. The terroir also provides a fertile ground for a large variety of grapes like Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tibouren, Rolle, and Ugni-Blanc.
