Winery Overview
Discover La Raia, a biodynamic Demeter certified farm set in Novi Ligure in the heart of the gentle Gavi hills, in Piedmont.
La Raia comprises of 180 hectares including 42 hectares of vineyards, 60 of agricultural fields where rye and spelt are farmed, pastures where Piedmont cows are bred, and a beautiful lake. The remaining land includes woodland of chestnuts, elderflowers and acacias.
La Raia’s vineyards are cultivated organically following the biodynamic method, which dispenses with pesticides and herbicides. This method also adds a new kind of vitality to the soil, which in the past had suffered the use of heavy tools and tractors. Today, as much work on the vineyards as possible is done manually and only when necessary, light tractors are used, always following the vine’s schedule.
In addition, the entire winery process (Demeter certified), follows the biodynamic principles: low temperatures, the slightest usage of sulphur, local yeasts.
This exclusive ecosystem and quality approach produces wines of great personality: three types of Gavi D.O.C.G. and two types of Piemonte Barbera D.O.C
During spring and summer, visitors can enjoy a walk among grassed rows to discover the green manure technique, which allows the vines’ roots to get the richest nourishment from the deep soil.
Visit the winery, with its unique architecture, which perfectly blends contemporary materials, like glass and steel, with ancient building techniques, such as rammed earth. Its distinctive feature is the great pisé wall created by the Austrian artist and architect Martin Rauch, the greatest international expert of this technique.
Guests will be given an explanation of the biodynamic winemaking methods, and of course enjoy a tasting from the wine collection, which takes place inside the winery during winter and near the estate’s lake in spring and summer.
